9F 2-10-0 freight locomotive 92214 (with D5054) travelling light south through Quorn and Woodhouse station, Great Central Railway heritage weekend 'Railways at Work' (GCR August 2023) 92214 is carrying shed code 82F Bath (ex S & D Railway)

9F.92214 was built at Swindon in October, 1959 and started life at Cardiff Canton depot, but soon moved to Banbury where it hauled the heavy ironstone trains from the Oxfordshire quarries to the steel works in South Wales and also hauled fast goods services to Old Oak Common. By 1961 9F 92214 was transferred to Newport (Ebbw Junction) to haul heavy freights of coal and mineral traffic in the South Wales area. From 1964 it was allocated to Bath Green Park depot to haul holiday excursions over the Ex Somerset & Dorset railway (which was incorporated in the GWR and British Railways Western Region). It is probable that No.92214 was the last 9F 2-10-0 to operate over the line from Bath to Bournemouth. After that it went to Severn Tunnel Junction from where it was withdrawn in 1965, only six years after it was built.

9F 2-10-0 92214 COCK O' THE NORTH  in Black and White

92214 has been named "CENTRAL STAR" and "LEICESTER CITY" while working on the GCR railway

BUT in 2015 92214 adopted the guise of 92220 EVENING STAR

The pictures below illustrate 92214 masquerading as 92220 in British Railways green livery (GCR Loughborough, June 2015).

9F 2-10-0 steam locomotive was named in "Cock O' The North" in 2011 and fully lined out in fictional BR Lined Black livery which the 9F's never carried. It is now fully operational at the Great Central Railway where 92214 has been renamed "LEICESTER CITY" after the city's football club. After being on loan to the East Lancashire Railway between 2006 and 2008, it was then bought by the 92214 Locomotive Group (based at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley, and fully restored to working order. "Cock O' The North" been carried by three locomotives and the name was suggested by Valerie Walter, the Company Secretary of the company owning the locomotive (PV Premier Limited), whose grandfather served with the Gordon Highlanders during the First World War (Cock o' the North being the traditional epithet attached to the Chief of the Gordon Clan of Scotland). On 29 June 2013 it gained a full ten year boiler ticket. After arriving at the GCR earlier that month, on 27 January 2014 it was announced that 92214 had been personally bought by the GCR chairman, and was to remain there. 92214 appeared at the GCR gala in 'weathered' plain BR black livery, and the 'Cock O' The North' name was removed. 92214 was subsequently repainted into lined BR Brunswick Green as carried by sister loco 92220 'Evening Star'. 92214 has been named "CENTRAL STAR" on the GCR.
