Bo-Bo diesel locomotives

BR freight diesel locomotives

Class 20 Type 1 diesel-electric locomotives were built from 1957-1968 by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows or at the Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn works at Darlington.

Class 20 locomotives have a maximum tractive effort of 42000 lbf (187 kN) and Class 20 diesels have a maximum speed of 75 mph. Class 20 locomotives only have one cab at one end and consequently they often work in pairs.

Class 20 diesel locomotives were built for light to moderately heavy freight trains.

Class 20 diesel locomotives are powered by English Electric 8SVT engines, 746 kW (~1000 hp) at 850 rpm, power at rail is 574 kW (770 hp). The Class 20 transmission is electric via four EE 526/5D axle-hung traction motors. The Class 20s weigh 74 tonnes, wheel diameter 1092 m (1.092 m) with a maximum tractive effort is 187 kN (42000 lbf) and maximum speed of 75 mph.

Class 20 031 (diesel locomotive Class 20/3 20031, D8031, D 8031) at Haworth workshops on the KWVR. 20031 was built in 1962 by English Electric at Robert Stephenson & hawthorn works at Darlington.

The British Rail (BR) Class 20, also known as an English Electric Type 1, are a class of diesel-electric locomotive essentially designed for moderately heavy freight work (but often work in pairs on heavy freight trains), with a limited use in hauling passenger trains. A total, of 228 Class 20 diesel locomotives in the class were built by English Electric between 1957 and 1968, the large number being was partly due to failure of earlier designs within the same power range to provide reliable locomotives.

The locomotives were originally numbered D8000–D8199 and D8300–D8327. Apparently they are known by railway enthusiasts as "Choppers" because of the distinctive beat that the engine that sounds like a helicopter.

The Bo-Bo Type Class 20's were built by English Electric with a power classification of 1000 hp. The Type 20/1 locomotives were built by English Electric between 1957 and 1968 and often operated in pairs coupled nose to nose in pairs also gave better visibility i.e. a driving cab at each end for convenience. These diesel locomotives carry British Rail Blue from the 1970s and 1980s.

These is known as a Railhead Treatment Train (RHTT). Both of these Class 20 locomotives were refurbished as Class 20/3 in 1996-1996 by Brush Traction at Loughborough.

A 2 x duo of Class 20 locomotives 'top and tailing' a two tanker train (explain? see * note below) near the GBRf depot at Peterborough (snapshots from a East Coast mainline train!). The two GBRf locomotives on the right are Class 20 20905 and Class 20 20901, couldn't identify the two Class 20 locos in BR blue and yellow livery.

* A note from a Richard Hanes: Class 20 locos were (still are?) used to take London Underground stock to and from Derby for maintenance, and for the delivery of newly built trains.   LU use special couplings and to interface with the Class 20 locos with the 'barrier' tanker wagons that have normal couplings at one end and LU couplings the other.  The train in your photo would split into two and the LU stock would be coupled between the two halves. Why they needed four class 20 locos for the run (and why they used tankers for the coupling conversion) remains a mystery.  For easy stock manipulation a driving cab at each end would obviously be beneficial, but I would have thought a single Class 20 at each end would have been adequate? Originally the use for "barrier wagons" was to isolate hazardous cargo from the rest of the train, but the term is also used for coupling adaptors as here.
