Class 14 diesel locomotives were designed for short distance freight train transfers between yards Class 14 diesel hydraulic locomotives were built by British Railways at Swindon from 1964-1965. Class 14 locos have a maximum tractive effort of 30910 lbf (135 kN) and have a maximum speed of 40 mph. Class 14 locomotives are fitted with Voith hydraulic transmission from a Paxman Ventura 650 hp (485 kW) engine. Many were sold of by British Railways but a good few of these Class diesel locomotives have been preserved on heritage railways. The central driving cab of Class 14 locos gives them a good all-round visibility. Class 14 diesel-hydraulic 0-6-0 locomotive D9523 (BR loco D 9523), built at Swindon in 1964. These relatively small (medium sized? quite a high tractive effort) Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built for marshalling yard shunting and hauling short distance freight trains. Class 14 locos have a nearly central cab with good bonnet views in either direction, hence easily driven in any direction.

Class 14 locomotives are powered by a Paxman 6-cylinder Ventura engine giving a power rating 650 bhp (485 kW), which is connected to a Voith hydraulic transmission and Hunslet gearbox. The axles are connected by coupling rods which are driven by a jackshaft located under the cab, between the second and third axles (you can see this class 14 arrangement in the profile image above.

A history of Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotives The Class 14 was a short‑lived
but iconic fleet of 56 diesel‑hydraulic 0‑6‑0 locomotives built at
Swindon Works in 1964–65, intended for trip‑freight and yard work, but
withdrawn from BR service after only 4–6 years. Why the Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built (1962–64)British Railways’ Western Region needed a modern locomotive for short‑distance freight transfers, yard shunting, and local trip workings. In January 1963 BR ordered 26 locomotives, but before construction even began the order was expanded to 56 because the region expected a boom in local freight. All were built at Swindon Works—the last diesel type designed and constructed there. Technical Design of Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotivesThe Class 14 was a compact but powerful diesel‑hydraulic locomotive with several distinctive features:
The cab was offset‑centre, giving excellent visibility for shunting. Enthusiasts nicknamed them “Teddy Bears”, after a Swindon foreman joked: “We’ve built The Great Bear—now we’re going to build a Teddy Bear!” BR Service Life of Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotives (1964–1970)The first locomotive appeared in July 1964. All were initially allocated to the Western Region, but the timing was disastrous: the Beeching cuts eliminated many of the branch lines and yards they were built to serve. Transfer to the Eastern RegionIn 1967, 33 locomotives were transferred to Hull Dairycoates for dock work. However:
By 1968, all 33 Eastern Region locomotives were stored and then withdrawn. WithdrawalThe entire class was withdrawn from BR between 1968 and 1970—one of the shortest BR careers of any diesel class. Industrial Second Life of Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotivesAlthough unsuccessful on BR, the Class 14s were perfect for industry. Many were sold to:
Their rugged construction and good visibility made them ideal for heavy shunting. Some even worked abroad:
One locomotive later assisted in High Speed 1 construction in the 2000s. Preservation of Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotivesA remarkable 19 locomotives survive—an unusually high proportion for such a small class. They are now found on heritage railways across Britain, including:
