Class 47 Co-Co Diesel-electric Locomotives

The Class 47 Brush Sulzer BR Locomotives were designed for BR mainline passenger trains on Eastern, Midland, Southern and Western Regions of British Railways. Class 47 also work freight trains.  Class 47 locomotives were built from 1962 to 1968 by Brush Traction at Loughborough or at BR Crewe Works.  Class 47 locomotives have a maximum tractive effort of 267 kN/60000 lbf and maximum design speed of 95 mph. the Class 47 locomotives are powered by 1920 kW (2580 hp) Sulzer engines. Contemporary and Heritage-Preserved, Diesel, Diesel-Electric and Electric Locomotives Class 47 diesel locomotives have a power at rail rating of 1550 kW (2080 hp).

Class 47 diesel locomotive 760 (47760) plus steam locomotives 48151 and 46115 heading south towards Leeds at Colton Junction south of York with a charter train.

Class 47/4 diesel locomotive Class 47 47580 "County of Essex" in British Rail livery of blue body, yellow cab and grey roof (plus a large Union Jack), bring up the rear hauling Black 5 44932 with fellow diesel 47580 through Stratford Station from Ilford EMUD to Southall WCRC (Feb 18th 2014). In the past Class 47 47580 has been numbered D1762, 47167, 47732 and named "Restormel".

Due to fire risk in July 2014, passing through Malton station, the Scarborough Spa Express was diesel hauled by Class 47 diesel locomotive 47580.

The British Rail Class 47 is a class of British railway diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction.

A total of 512 Class 47 s were built at Crewe Works and Brush's Falcon Works, Loughborough between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive.

Class 47 diesel locomotives were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) – though this was later de-rated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability – and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 50 years.

Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number of class 47 diesels are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways.

Around 80 Class 47 locomotives still exist, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 30 retain "operational status" on the mainline.
