The Class 69 diesel  locomotive was developed to for the rail freight operator GB Railfreight (GBRf), which was unable to purchase additional Class 66 diesel locomotives but needed more capacity of similar power.

The conversion of surplus Class 56 diesels into Class 69 diesels proved a good option and more affordable than new build locomotives.

Class 69 locomotives have several new systems installed, similar, or identical to, those Class 66 locomotives, including its EMD 710 power plant and associated control systems

Retained systems were refurbished to an as-new condition.

Class 69 Diesel locomotive 69006 Pathfinder Tours (Peter Watts 50 years service 1973-2023), with a rake of hopper wagons of stone, Peterborough station, 2024. 69006 was produced by rebuilding Class 56 locomotive 56128.
