is one of the most historically significant and widely travelled of all
surviving Black 5s — a locomotive that worked until the very last days
of BR steam, avoided the scrapyard entirely, and today remains a
mainline‑certified engine regularly seen on the Jacobite. 45212 was built by Armstrong Whitworth in 1935, worked across northern England and Scotland, survived until August 1968 as one of the very last BR steam locomotives, entered preservation directly (never going to Barry), and today operates mainline services including the Jacobite. 1. Construction and Design Context of Black 5 locomotive 45212 (1935)
The Black Five conceptStanier’s Class 5MT was intended as a
go‑anywhere mixed‑traffic locomotive, powerful enough for
express work yet economical for freight. 2. LMS & BR Service Career of Black 5 locomotive 45212 (1935–1968)Early Allocations
Post‑war and BR Allocations45212 moved widely across the LMS and later BR network:
Final BR Duties45212 was one of the very last operational BR steam locomotives, withdrawn 3 August 1968. A Unique DistinctionOn 4 August 1968, 45212 hauled the final steam‑hauled revenue‑earning BR service, running from Preston to Blackpool. This places it at the absolute end of the BR steam era. 3. Preservation of Black 5 locomotive 45212 (1968–Present)Immediate Purchase — No Scrapyard45212 was purchased directly from BR in August
1968 by Ron Ainsworth for the Keighley & Worth Valley
Railway (KWVR). Early Preservation
North Yorkshire Moors Railway Period (2000–2011)
Mainline Overhaul (2012–2016)A 10‑year agreement with Riley & Son (E) Ltd saw 45212 rebuilt to mainline standards. Jacobite Service (2017–Present)Since 2017, 45212 has regularly hauled the Fort William–Mallaig Jacobite, including crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct. 4.
