On-Track Machines are used for maintaining, renewing and enhancing the infrastructure of the national railway network. The rail network is managed by Network Rail, though much of the work is franchised out to private companies. e.g. tampers, finishing machines, regulators, snowploughs, hopper wagons, maintenance vehicles with a variety of liveries.

A BALLAST TAMPER or TAMPING MACHINE is a machine used to pack (tamp) the track ballast under railway tracks to make the tracks more durable and enhance the stability of trains passing over them. A BALLAST REGULATOR ensures the right profile of the ballast as it is laid down by the tamper.

Network Rail Stone Blowers: Network Rail's Stone blower DR 80217 (Harsco Track Technologies Plain Line) at Malton Station. A Stoneblower train, which can move under its own power, is a railway machine that automatically lifts and packs the sleepers with small grade ballast, which is blown under the sleepers to level the track. This machine can cover a lots of track without using large gangs of railway workmen previously needed.

Network Rail Grinding Trains: A pair of Network Rail's Rail Grinders (Harsco Track Technologies RGH20C) DR 79261 (left) and DR 79271 (right) at Malton Station. A railgrinder is a vehicle or train used to restore and correct the profile and remove irregularities from worn rail track. This extends the life of the track and improve the ride of trains. Rail grinding equipment may be mounted on a single self-propelled vehicle or on a dedicated rail grinding train (like the pair above).
