Class J27 steam locomotive 65894 was built at Darlington Works in 1923 as NER locomotive 2392, later became LNER 5894, finally continued working under British Railways in 1948 as 65894.  Technical detail specifications of locomotive 65894:   Boiler pressure of 65894: 180 lbf/sq.in superheated.,   Weight of 65894: 47 tons, Wheel diameter of 65894: 4' 7¼'',  Valve gear of 65894: Stephenson Piston valves,  Cylinders (diameter x stroke) of 65894: 18½" x 26" (I),  Tractive effort of 65894: 24640 lbf., BR Power classification of 65894: Class 4F, Route availability RA 5.

The first P3 locomotives were built at Darlington works in 1906 and the initial batch comprised of 20 engines. The next batches were built by the North British Locomotive Company, Beyer Peacock in Manchester and then from Robert Stephenson and Company. Sir Vincent Raven then brought the design up to date by fitting superheated boilers and piston valves to a further batch built in 1921/2 and the last ten 10 where also built in 1923 of which No 2392 was the last, out shopped from Darlington North Road Works on 19th September 1923. The P3s where the largest N.E.R. 0-6-0'sand were powerful hard working engines which lasted until the end of steam in the North East of England in the 1960s. Initially 2392 was allocated to Bank Top shed, Darlington, then to Ferryhill to cover Durham coalfield workings until re-allocated in 1930 to York, mainly seeing use on local goods trains to Scarborough. In 1926 under the LNER’s the P3 locomotives where reclassified as the J27 Class, hence then identified as class J27 No.2392. In 1946, under the LNER’s renumbering scheme, No.2392 became No. 5894 and after nationalisation in 1948, the engine was renumbered again and became class J27 No.65894. The engine carried this identification until the end of its BR career in 1967 and after much restoration work under the auspices of the NELPG is still going strong in June 2018 on the NYMR.
