From Middlesbrough in Cleveland to Whitby in North Yorkshire My Archive Steam Photos from the 1960s * * The Network Rail new railway bridge at Castleton Moor Station, 2018
In March, 2018, a skip wagon struck the rail-over road bridge at the bottom of Langburn’s Bank close to Castleton Moor station on the Esk Valley Line. This vehicle impact inflicted significant damage to the bridge and caused the track to be dislodged. Since this incident, Network Rail has install a brand new steel girder bridge deck to the structure, and also installed piles into the abutments to strengthen the embankment and bridge supports.
Laying new track between Danby, Castleton Moor and Commondale Stations - February 2021 Network Rail has upgraded sections of track on the Esk Valley line, which date back to the 1940’s, to bring smoother journeys for passengers travelling between Middlesbrough and Whitby.
The track laying train was hauled down the Esk valley Line by Colas Rail Freight Class 70 diesel locomotive 70815
At the western end of the back the track laying train was backed up by Class 70 locomotive 70802, which presumably will haul the train away when the work is complete.
A section of the old 1940s track at Castleton Moor Station - well splintered sleepers. The old track has been lifted and replaced over 1.5 miles of track on sections of the line between Commondale, Castleton Moor and Danby.
The ballast – stones which support the track – and the wooden sleepers have been replaced as part of the £2.7million project. Preparing the old track prior to removal.

This Balfour Beatty high-output tracklaying system can complete an amazing average of 200 yards of track per hour, including laying up to 12 steel or concrete sleepers per minute before threading the rails into place!!! The Balfour Beatty FEA-D swl 6000 kgs track laying machine
This machine has a gantry unit that runs up and down the whole train to collect concrete sleepers before loading them onto the conveyor at the far end - amazing to watch its 'high speed' to and fro runs!
Sleeper carriers to replenish the track laying machine.
The new track - It will also reduce the amount of maintenance work which is required along the route. These improvements to the track follow work carried out earlier between Lealholm and Danby stations.
All done at Castleton Moor station, all new track laid down and track bed cleaned up!
New track recently re-laid to replace some very old wooden sleepers.
