Spelling note: sulphuric acid = sulfuric acid, sulphate = sulfate, aluminium = aluminum (US)

You must know four general word equations, all of which involve neutralisation (Foundation or Higher students) and higher students would be expected to write and interpret them as symbol equations too. (i) is also a redox reaction.

(i) metal + acid ==> a salt + hydrogen

(ii) basic oxide or hydroxide + acid ==> a salt + water

(iii) carbonate + acid ==> a salt + water + carbon dioxide

(iv) ammonia + acid ==> ammonium salt (note: no water formed, but ammonia (NH3) is an alkaline gas and soluble in water and neutralised by acids to form ammonium salts (NH4 ...)

The name of the salt depends on (i) the metal name, which becomes the first part of salt name, and (ii) the acid e.g. H2SO4 sulphuric acid makes a ... sulphate (...SO4), HCl hydrochloric acid makes a ... chloride (...Cl), HNO3 nitric acid makes a … nitrate (...NO3) and and CH3COOH ethanoic acid makes an ethanoate (...OOCCH3 or CH3COO..).
