Introduction to York Minster

THE INTERIOR OF THE NAVE of YORK MINSTER

York Minster - interior architecture of the nave: View from the west door, east down the nave to the altar and crossing. The nave was built from ~1291 to ~1350 in the Decorated Gothic architectural style and is one of the widest Gothic naves in Europe.

 

York Minster - interior architecture of the nave: Some examples of the roof bosses on the wooden vaulting of the nave. Along the centre line the carvings show episodes in the life of Christ and his mother Mary. These carvings are faithful reproductions of those destroyed in the nave fire of 1840.
