Introduction to York Minster

THE SOUTH TRANSEPT of YORK MINSTER

York Minster - South Transept architecture: Detail of the south side of York Minster including the famous circular Rose Window and the current main visitor entrance in the south transept which dates from the 13th century in the Early English architectural style was fashionable. Most of the windows are simple lancet (long, narrow and pointed) except for the elaborate carving of the gable which frames the Rose Window.

York Minster - South Transept architecture: The Rose Window.

 

York Minster - South Transept architecture: The outer petals of the Rose Window are red and white roses (the houses of York and Lancaster) and the work of 16th century Flemish glass-painters. The glass in the centre dates from the 18th century and is in the form of a sunflower from which golden rays radiate from a circle of blue tinted glass.
