Portfolio 6. Work based on the coast near St Ives, Cornwall Peter M. Hicks Northern Landscape Artist

These paintings are the result of working in and around St Ives at various times over the past ten years. At first I was very conscious of the considerable artistic legacy of St Ives. Later I became aware of how different my own responses to the area were, from those had worked there before me. I have tried to bring to my work the same passion that I feel, for the work I do on my own North Yorkshire Moors. I hope to respond to this in Cornwall with eyes of unfamiliarity, with newness and surprise. My work simplifies visual images but not to abstraction. The world between realism and non-figurative is a rich, poetic hinterland, and my task as an artist is to explore this domain. The further I get from the image the nearer I get to what I feel about what I have seen. I never work to gain a sense of belonging here. My very detachment gives me a kind of access. My battles and experiences in this place never allow me familiarity; things remain always new to me.

The landscape and seascape of Cornwall is beloved by many artists and St Ives in Cornwall is the most well known 'artist haven' down in the most westerly part of the 'West Country' of England. The clear air and bright colours give this area a unique quality ... Peter Hicks
