Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal (c) St Mary's Church 17d Fountains Hall and Fountains Mill Studley Royal is not your usual English garden, and contains few flowers. John Aislabie created this late 18th century garden known as Studley Royal., including statues, follies, deer park and the water gardens - pools, lakes and canal features. All the features of Studley Royal are readily accessible via well designed walks. John's son William bought the Abbey ruins in 1767 and they became the star attraction in the 'gardens' now managed by the National Trust! I have only added a few brief notes and left the pictures to inspire you to visit Studley Royal.

The Temple of Fame was originally erected by the Banqueting House, but in 1781 William Aislable moved this eight column rotunda to this site and had it reconstructed in an Adamesque style.
The Octagonal Tower was originally built in a severe Classical form but was Gothicized in 1738when the parapet pinnacles and porch were added.

The house on the left is the Choristers House (and can be rented from the National Trust as a holiday cottage)
This handsome house has an interesting history and was designed by the acclaimed architect William Burges and the name arises because it was used as a music school.

The Moon Pond with its flanking crescent basins provides the setting for three lead statues of Bacchus, Neptune and Endymion, believed to be the work of the 18th century craftsman Andrew Carpenter.

The Temple of Piety, Studley Royal, was originally dedicated to Hercules, building starting in 1740. John Aislabie's son William re-dedicated this Greek Doric Temple soon after the death of his father in 1742 as a symbol of piety. The interior was not finished until 1748 when it was decorated by the York plasterer Guiseppe Cortese.
