St Michael's Church dates from medieval times but has been much restored and rebuilt over the last few centuries.

St Michael's Church in Liverton Village, Cleveland, England is a historic church that has been a part of the community for centuries. The church dates back to the 12th century and has seen many changes over the years.

The first mention of the church was in the 12th century in the Domesday Book, which records the church as being owned by the Bishop of Durham. The original church was a small structure consisting of a nave and chancel with a low tower at the west end of the church.

Over the centuries, various additions and renovations have been made to the church. In the 14th century, a south aisle was added to the church, and in the 15th century, a new tower was built to replace the old one. The tower was designed with a square base and an octagonal section above it.

During the English Civil War, St Michael's Church was damaged by Parliamentary troops, and the building fell into disrepair. Restoration work was undertaken in the 19th century, with a new nave and chancel being built in 1870.

In the 20th century, further restoration work was carried out on the church. In the 1960s, the roof was repaired, and the interior of the church was redecorated. In the 1970s, a new bell tower was built, and the old tower was converted into a porch.

Today, St Michael's Church is a thriving community church that is used for regular worship services and community events. It is also a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming to admire the church's historic architecture and beautiful stained glass windows.

St Michael's Church is an important part of the history and heritage of Liverton Village and the wider Cleveland area, and it continues to be a much-loved and cherished landmark.

The Water Wheel Inn is a popular pub in the tiny village of Liverton

The B1366 road down to Liverton and Loftus from the A171 Guisborough-Whitby road

The Waterwheel Inn and Carvery is in Liverton Village is on the B1366 road that runs north to Loftus off the busy A171 main road from Guisborough to Whitby. The Water Wheel offers good pub food and a friendly welcome, rated well by the regulars and popular with parties for a night out. Nearby down the road is the Rebuilt medieval church of St Michael which contains some fine Norman stonework carving. The village lies in farmland but the road down off the A171 runs through part of the moorland of edge of the North York Moors.

Scaling Dam

Once a major local water supply, Scaling Dam, on the A171 road to Whitby, is now used by sailing boats-dingies and ducks and geese calling in at the nature reserve!

The Grapes pub stands just across from Scaling dam

The Grapes Inn, Scaling Dam, lies on the busy A171 main road from Guisborough in Cleveland to Whitby in North Yorkshire. It offers good pub food and there is a lovely walk all around the Scaling Dam reservoir and plenty of wildlife to see as well, prior to retiring to the Grapes!  Good car park and picnic spot near the Scaling Dam Sailing Club. The small quiet village of Scaling is on the northern edge of the North York Moors.

Freeborough Hill

Freeborough Hill - NOT man-made, natural hill of rocks a little less eroded than its neighbours!

I'm 2nd from the right !!!

The Jolly Sailor Inn, near Moorsholm, on the busy A171 main road from Guisborough in Cleveland to Whitby in North Yorkshire and offers good food and a friendly welcome.  The 'pub' lies on the northern edge of the North York Moors. Just before, and just after the Jolly Sailor, there are several lay-bys (made from parts of the original A171) to stop for a driving rest or picnic with views of the striking, but naturally formed Freeborough Hill. The Jolly Sailor is on the middle-left of the top-right picture and is a popular pub with a good reputation and caters well for large parties.
