A fascinating subject for artists and photographers re-edit 23/04/2023 The coastal area north of Redcar provides the visitor with a range of dramatic landscapes and seascapes. Scenes of Redcar, Cleveland, North East England
Looking up the coast from Redcar beach, towards the steelworks and South Gare at mouth of the River Tees. A beautiful long beach and not many tourists around, just the odd windsurfer.
Redcar steelworks, the main blast furnace complex. The Redcar Steelworks was originally established as the Warrenby Ironworks in 1913 by a company called Dorman Long. The purpose of the ironworks was to produce pig iron, which was used in the production of steel. During World War I, the ironworks produced shells and other munitions for the war effort. After the war, the ironworks expanded and began producing steel. In the years leading up to World War II, the ironworks became one of the largest producers of steel in the UK. During the war, the ironworks produced steel for a variety of military purposes, including tanks and planes. After the war, the ironworks continued to produce steel and became an important part of the UK's manufacturing industry. In the 1960s, the ironworks was acquired by British Steel Corporation and became known as the Redcar Steelworks. During the 1970s and 1980s, the steel industry in the UK was hit hard by competition from overseas and changes in global demand. The Redcar Steelworks struggled to compete with lower-cost producers in Asia and Europe and began to experience financial difficulties. In the 1990s, the British government began to privatize the steel industry, and the Redcar Steelworks was sold to a private company called Corus. Corus invested in modernizing and upgrading the plant, but the steelworks continued to face financial difficulties. In 2015, the Redcar Steelworks was closed due to a combination of falling demand, competition from overseas, and rising costs. The closure of the steelworks had a significant impact on the local community and the wider steel industry in the UK. It also highlighted the challenges that the steel industry faces in a globalized economy.
