South Gare is a small, sandy peninsula located at the mouth of the River Tees in Cleveland, England. The area was originally formed as a natural sand dune and salt marsh, but over time it has been developed and reclaimed for various uses.

In the 19th century, South Gare became an important industrial area due to the growth of the coal and iron industries in the Teesside area. A pier was constructed at the mouth of the river to facilitate the export of coal from nearby mines. The pier also served as a base for maritime activities, including shipbuilding and fishing.

During World War II, South Gare played a significant role in the war effort. The area was heavily fortified to protect against enemy attacks and was used as a base for anti-aircraft guns and coastal artillery batteries. The remains of some of these fortifications can still be seen today.

In the post-war period, South Gare became a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its stunning beaches and rugged coastline. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1979 in order to protect its unique ecology.

Today, South Gare is still a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, birds, and rare plants. The pier and surrounding waters are also popular among anglers, and there are various hiking and cycling trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
