7. St Mary's Church, Bishophill Junior and Jacob's Well House
St Mary's Church, Bishophill Junior is the oldest church in the City and the lower parts of the tower date back to Saxon times in the early 11th century (pre Norman Conquest) and contain re-used Roman masonry. You can see these construction changes in the layers of masonry i.e. compare the lower Saxon and the higher medieval layers.
St Mary's Church, Bishophill Junior is well hidden away in the back streets just north of the southern City walls east of Micklegate Bar (can only be viewed inside by appointment?). The aisles were added in the 12th and 14th centuries and the chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century and restored in 1860 along with much of the exterior.
