Sometimes incorrectly referred to as the 'North York Moors Railway' or the 'North Yorks Moor Railway', but, whatever, the line is set in the beautiful North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire, Northern England and these steam train rides are a major tourist attraction - lots of steam train photos of locomotives in action

14-16 Goathland to Newtondale to Levisham to Pickering (return trip)

Note

  1. Grosmont is at the hub of the NYMR operations with its station platform interchange with Network Rail, the locomotive depot, restoration and maintenance workshops and carriage sheds.

  2. Goathland and Levisham are the two 'crossing' places on this mainly single track railway, so two trains are usually co-reside for a few minutes.

  3. Newtondale Halt is a request stop station, so if on the platform, put your hand out as if its a bus! and if on the train PLEASE tell the guard you want to get off and also make sure you are in the correct carriage - the trains are quite long and Newtondale Halt has a relatively short platform!

  4. Goathland is the setting for TV's 'Aidensfield' the village in the very popular ITV series called 'Heartbeat'

  5. Pickering is a very pleasant friendly town with the Beck Isle Museum, medieval Pickering Castle and the Church of St Peter and St Paul (medieval wall paintings) which are all worth a visit.

  6. Whitby Town is a popular tourist destination whether the visitors come to stay or day-trippers. With its shops, places to eat, beaches, harbour of boats and yachts, historic buildings like St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey and coastal walks, it has much to offer the visitor.

Hospitality in Grosmont - cafes, pubs, B&B, holiday cottages, hotels etc.

The Signals Tea Room provides drinks and snacks on the platform of Grosmont Station for the steam hauled trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is a wonderful scenic run to Goathland and on to Pickering.

The Old Schoolhouse Coffee Shop, Grosmont, not surprisingly, is in the old village school building. It lies beneath Grosmont Church and adjacent to the viewing NYMR point for watching the trains go by. It is very pleasant inside, but you can also sit outside to view the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Railway.
The Geall Gallery Art Cafe, Grosmont. Very artistic surroundings for cup of tea, coffee and cakes etc. This was the Grosmont Art Gallery and Jazz Cafe on Front street. It has fine displays of fine art work by local artist and despite the modest frontage, there is a lot to view inside and take refreshment in very colourful surroundings.
The Hazlewood Tea Rooms on Front Street, Grosmont, as well as indoors has a lovely outdoor tables above the River Murk Esk, a lovely setting on a fine day. Here you can get freshly made scones, cakes and light refreshment and you can sample the 'Grosmont Tart', the proprietor's speciality!
The Grosmont Co-Operative Society on Front Street was established in 1867 and is still going strong. A variety of basic provisions and snacks and sweets are available AND it is the local post office - note the nice old fashioned red letter box in the wall by the level crossing at Grosmont station.

On the right of the Grosmont Co-Op are left to right: (i) The Railway Shop for all sorts of railway related gifts and specialises in model railway objects - locomotives, carriages, wagons, scenery etc. (ii) The Crossing Bar Club 'Purveyor of Fine Ales' and (iii) the Grosmont Bookshop with a fine selection of books on railways, local history, natural history, children's books etc.
