Part 3 Animals - Behavioural adaptations described and explained

These describe how an organism behaves to adapt to its environment e.g.

Many animals migrate from colder to warmer climates to find food and breed, and return at the end of the season e.g. birds like ducks and swallows.

By migration many species avoid the harshness and dangers of a cold climate.

In e.g. low temperature arctic regions where food resources are low in winter, other animals that do not migrate can hibernate - they 'fatten up' in the summer and 'sleep' through the winter months.

 

Penguins huddle together to keep each other warm in the frozen wastes or the Arctic and Antarctic.

On average there is less body surface area exposed to the cold air and winds.

 

Many desert animals (e.g. mammals like rodents) in hot climates live for much of their time in burrows underground where there is more moisture and cooler out of direct sunlight.

Such animals tend to be more active in the cooler mornings as well as moving to more shaded areas to keep cool and other animals rest in the shade particularly in the middle hottest parts of the day to minimise the absorption of heat.

Minimising excessive heat gain can be helped by being more active (hunting-feeding) in the cooler nighttime.

In hot countries animals can increase their heat loss and cool down by bathing in water. Not only does the water absorb heat, but evaporation from the skin absorbs heat energy (just like in sweating) - latent heat of evaporation absorbed from the animals body.

Unlike mammals, reptiles find very high and very low temperature conditions difficult to deal with because they have no internal mechanism to control their body temperature.

Therefore reptiles either:

(i) bask in the sun to warm up

(ii) rest in the shade to keep cool in the hottest part of the day.

Behavioural Adaptations of Animals

Animals have developed complex behavioural adaptations to enhance survival, locate food, avoid predators, and reproduce successfully.

1. Hibernation

Some animals, like hedgehogs, hibernate during winter by slowing their metabolism to conserve energy when food is scarce.

2. Migration

Birds, such as swallows, migrate to warmer climates during winter to access food and escape extreme temperatures.

3. Courtship Behaviour

Many species have specific mating rituals to attract partners. Peacocks display their elaborate tail feathers, while frogs call loudly to signal readiness to mate.

4. Camouflage Behaviour

Some animals actively change colour to blend in with their surroundings, like chameleons, or use their environments for camouflage.

5. Nocturnal Activity

Animals such as owls and bats have adapted to be nocturnal, reducing competition for food and avoiding daytime predators.

6. Hunting and Predatory Strategies

  • Wolves hunt in packs to increase their chances of capturing prey.

  • Spiders spin webs strategically to trap insects efficiently.

7. Social Behaviour and Cooperation

Certain species, like meerkats, live in groups where individuals take turns standing guard to warn of predators.

8. Tool Use

Some animals, like crows and chimpanzees, use objects as tools to obtain food. For example, chimpanzees use sticks to extract termites from nests.

9. Territorial Behaviour

Many species mark territories to prevent intruders from taking their resources. For example, dogs and wolves use scent-marking.

10. Parental Care

Some animals invest heavily in their offspring. Birds such as penguins protect and feed their chicks for months to ensure survival.

These adaptations ensure that both plants and animals thrive in their environments, demonstrating nature’s remarkable ability to evolve over time.
