Meerkats

Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are small, social mammals native to the arid regions of southern Africa, particularly the Kalahari and Namib deserts.

Their evolutionary success stems from a combination of cooperative behaviour, burrowing lifestyle, and keen sensory adaptations that allow them to thrive in harsh, predator-rich environments.

Evolutionary Advantages of Meerkats

  • Highly Social Structure: Living in cooperative groups (mobs or clans) enhances survival through shared vigilance, care of young, and resource defense.
  • Burrowing Lifestyle: Underground dens provide protection from predators and extreme temperatures.
