City of YORK SCENES The Burton Gallery of York Art Gallery displays some paintings, sculptures and ceramics from York Art Gallery's finest collections. The gallery is dedicated to John Burton who in 1882 bequeathed his great collection of over one hundred Victorian paintings to the City of York. The gallery possesses one of the most interesting collections of old masters, outside of London galleries. They cover all the major European schools of painting from 1350-1800. Paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries are also well represented. There really good interesting temporary exhibitions e.g. World War I paintings in 2016. YORK ART GALLERY
The statue of the artist William Etty stands in Exhibition Square in front of the entrance to York Art Gallery
The entrance to York Art Gallery
Exhibition Square was created in 1879 and takes its name from the Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition of that year for which the Art Gallery building was built. All the images from York Art Gallery below were taken from August 2015 onwards (pre 2015 at end of page) The photographs were taken in York Art Gallery with a cheap camera! Despite effects of lighting and too long exposure times with some blurring, the images are just about in enough focus to get the gist of the paintings BUT these beautiful works need to be seen for real! I recently purchased my YMT (York Museums Trust) card, only £22 for years visits to York Art Gallery, Yorkshire Museum (Museum Gardens) and the Castle Museum. EXCELLENT VALUE
Don't forget the lovely quiet 'artists gardens' at the back of York's Art Gallery, and note the medieval tower on part of the city walls - actually the walls of the abbey.
