The Leeds- Liverpool canal passes between the mill buildings of New Mill, Saltaire.

Saltaire village is near Shipley and the n of Sir Titus Salt who in 1850 decided to move his famous and very successful alpaca and mohair mills out of Bradford to a new site in a more pleasant site in the open West Yorkshire countryside. Houses were built for the workers and their families with better sanitary conditions and also to provide their spiritual and intellectual needs.
