Crathorne is a village and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The River Leven flows through the parish. The village is the ancestral home of the Crathorne family, dating back to Sir William de Crathorne, knighted by Edward II in 1327. The village is now home to James Dugdale, 2nd Baron Crathorne, whose family purchased the Crathorne estate in 1844 and rebuilt Crathorne Hall in 1906, owning it until 1977, but the hall is now a country house hotel owned by Hand Picked Hotels. The village is also home to Crathorne Cricket Club in the best traditions of Yorkshire cricket. The Crathorne area has some prehistory, e.g. a Romano-British farmstead of the 4th century AD. Carvings found at the site of the Anglican church date back to the 9th century, but the Crathorne area was still waste at the time of the Domesday Book, after the dreadful 'Harrying of the North' by William the Conqueror after the rebellion by the Northern Earls. Crathorne village was held by a family who took the name de Crathorne in the early 13th century and continued as lords of the manor until the estate was sold to the Dugdale family in 1844. The original Crathorne family were strong adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, the village retaining a large Catholic population into the Victorian era. Crathorne is very much an estate village, much of it still in the ownership of the Dugdale family and seat of Lord Crathorne, the majority of houses being rental properties, once occupied by workers on the estate, many working in agriculture and other trades on the estate. Crathorne village still has a post office and shop, two churches, a village hall and a pub, the Crathorne Arms, as well as a fine cricket ground and pavilion. The centre of the village is a conservation area, giving it increased environmental protection and Crathorne village is a very attractive place to live, with a strong sense of community.

St Mary's R.C. church is a lovely 'cosy' setting for a wedding venue, maybe followed by a wedding reception at Crathorne Hall!?

The Anglican church in Crathorne, All saints church still retains sections of Norman masonry but no fine detail from the Norman or medieval period.

The west tower and chancel of All Saints date from 1887-1888.

A base from an old cross? in All saints Church graveyard, and the 'Reading Room', does this act as the village hall?

Crathorne Hall is a large and lavish neo-Georgian stone mansion built by Sir Ernest George & Yates in 1906-1909. It has long and symmetrical range with attached pedimented portico. It is a popular venue for wedding receptions.
