TYNEMOUTH TOWN

Tynemouth is situated on the northern banks at the mouth of the great River Tyne and there is archaeological evidence of 2000 years of occupation. In the late 18th century mainly consisted of the Priory and Gatehouse and a few houses, but Tynemouth became quite a popular sea-side destination and with the coming of the railway a sizeable town developed.

TYNEMOUTH CASTLE

The entrance to Tynemouth Castle ('The Gatehouse'), is managed and maintained by English Heritage.

Tynemouth Castle is effectively a fortified gatehouse with entry through a Barbican of the early 14th century.

The deep defensive ditch on the landward west side of Tynemouth Castle, a very strongly defendable position with steep sea-cliffs on most of the three sides (north, east and south).

Important defensive work on Tynemouth Castle was done in the late 13th century (e.g. crenellation of the curtain walls).

The north pier of Tynemouth is a most impressive breakwater and the same on the south side of the mouth of the River Tyne.
