Church of St Edmund

The parish of Sedgefield was created by Cutheard of Lindisfarne during his time as Bishop of Lindisfarne (900 and 915). Like many early Christian foundations the first church was likely made of wood and this was later replaced with a stone church built by the Normans. Little, if any, of the Norman Church survives.

The current church of St Edmund was built between 1246 and 1256. The church is dedicated to Edmund of Abingdon, a former Archbishop of Canterbury who died in 1240 (shortly before the church was built).

There have been a number of additions to the building e.g. in c.1290 transepts and a chancel were added; around 1490 the fine west tower was added; in the 19th century a porch was added; and a vestry and organ chamber were added in 1913.

After over 700 years of faithful service, St Edmund's  church was designated a grade I listed building in 1968.

The dominating Perpendicular west tower with its massive diagonal buttresses, two-light bell-openings, battlements an pinnacles.

Unfortunately, this very fine County Durham church was closed, but I believe its well worth a visit to view and study the interior
