circular walk from Hutton-le-Hole to Gillamoor and Douthwaite Dale

Starting from the village green in Lastingham Village (the church is up on the left)
Leaving Lastingham in a southerly direction you pick up a path that climbs up to Oldfield Lane.
You continue walking west along Oldfield Lane until you reach the quiet hamlet of Spaunton with its one wide street.
This old house in Spaunton is dated 1695.
From Spaunton village you zig-zag through Grange Farm with pleasant views across rolling fields and the moors beyond - excellent quiet and unassuming rambling country.
I think its an organic farm? and nice to see the wind turbines working above the wool producing sheep - a modern 'natural' scene!

The nice 'green lane' between Grange Farm and Hutton-le-Hole.
First view of Hutton-le-Hole and a wonderful ('hazy'!) panoramic views of the moorland beyond and the road up to Blakey Ridge.

Hutton-le-Hole appears through the trees at Austin Head.
A lunch break in Hutton-le-Hole and there is a pub and cafe in Hutton-le-Hole!
You then head northwest until you reach the Hutton-le-Hole to Lastingham road which you leave at Mary Magdalen's Well and head north to the edge of the open moor (southern part of Spaunton Moor) and the walk north-east along another lovely path north of Camomile farm.
Only a few trees like these Scots Pine survive on the wild open moorland of Spaunton Moor.
You then drop south back into Lastingham passing the Grange Hotel - a great afternoon tea and sandwiches!
and back to the green, from which you can walk up to visit to the St Mary's Church, which is well worthwhile a visit.

2 Lastingham → Spaunton (1 mile)Follow the quiet lane gently uphill. Spaunton appears ahead as a linear village on a high shelf, with long views south across Ryedale. Spaunton village
Continue through the village, keeping the green on your left. 3 Spaunton → Hutton‑le‑Hole (1.5 miles)At the far end of Spaunton, take the signed footpath heading north‑east towards Hutton‑le‑Hole. This is a beautiful section:
As you descend, Hutton‑le‑Hole opens out below you — one of the most photographed villages in the Moors. 4 Hutton‑le‑Hole (explore the village)You arrive near the Ryedale Folk Museum, a superb open‑air museum of historic buildings. What to enjoy in the village
Hutton‑le‑Hole’s layout reflects centuries of grazing rights and common land — the green is still actively used by sheep from the surrounding farms. 5 Hutton‑le‑Hole → Lastingham (2 miles)From the museum area, take the footpath signed Lastingham, heading south‑east. This return leg is one of the loveliest short valley crossings in the area:
You descend into the village past old farm buildings and rejoin the lane near the church. 6 Finish: LastinghamYou end back at St Mary’s Church, with the Blacksmiths Arms close by — a perfect place to finish. Why This Walk Works So Well
