 30.  The Village of Great Edstone

St Michael's and All Angels Church

Great Edstone is a tiny hamlet a few miles south of Kirkbymoorside and A170 main road.

It is set on a low hill above the surrounding farmland of Rydale, part of the Vale of Pickering.

The origin of the name 'Edstone' is believed to be old English for "Eadin's farm/settlement."

My reason for photographing the church was due to singing there in 2016 as a member of the 'Dalesmen Singers' based in Danby, as the photographs below testify too!

The main residential street is called the 'Wapping', and is the 'manor House', the oldest house in Great Edstone?

 St Michael's and All Angels Church, Great Edstone is a small church with a small bell tower, but with ancient origins of which little is seen with centuries of repairs and restorations.

 

 There is an old Saxon sun dial above the south doorway of St Michael's and All Angels Church, Great Edstone, now the main entrance.

Very little of the Saxon or Norman architecture survives but the sun dial and doorway arches indicate early multiple origins of the church.

 St Michael's and All Angels Church, Great Edstone is a small church which basically consists of the nave and little else.
