Coxwold & surrounding area, North Yorkshire

25. Circular walk from Coxwold via Husthwaite & Newburgh Priory

The pictures on page 25 (and pages 26-29) illustrate walk number 47 "The Charms of Coxwold" (5¼ miles) from the excellent walking guide "Walks on the North York Moors" Book 2 by Jack Keighley.

 The walk starts and ends in the village of Coxwold and provides a varied scenario of villages of pretty cottages and interesting churches, rolling rural landscape (for more views of the village buildings see page 26 and details of St Michael's Church on page 27 at top of above picture) At the start or end of the walk you can see St Michael's Church, Shandy Hall, the Old Grammar School, The Almshouses etc. etc.

After leaving Coxwold village you are soon walking through tranquil farmland with views of the White Horse of Kilburn and the Hambleton Hills, scraped out of the limestone hills above the fields of grain.

Good to see great oak and ash trees in their 'natural habitat' on the way to Husthwaite Village.

Look out for the many attractive buildings en route e.g. Coxwold Park House (above) and a red brick cottage dated 1896 (below) near Angram Hall Farm ....

... and the wild flowers e.g. meadow cranesbill and poppies in the 'healthy' hedgerows (the wind turbine is attached to the old station house? of Husthwaite near Elphin Bridge)

Eventually you come into the Husthwaite Village by the Norman church of St Nicholas which is a must to visit - a little gem of a building and contents! (St Nicholas church details on page 29 and Husthwaite Village building examples on page 28)

Black Bull Cottage built in 1570 is across the road from St Nicholas in the centre of Husthwaite Village.

A swathe of poppies in a field down from Beacon Banks between Husthwaite and Newburgh Priory.

Looking west from Beacon Banks, down to Husthwaite Village and across the Vale of York to the Yorkshire Dales.

The White Horse of Kilburn and the Hambleton Hills can be splendidly seen (even on a grey afternoon!) from Beacon Banks and the old 'trig' point at the 434 ft summit!).

There seems to a trend in attractive brick built barn arches in the Coxwold area (High Leys Farm).

You go past the entrance to Newburgh Priory and the lake in the grounds below it on the road to Coxwold.

Finally, Coxwold Village is re-entered.
