16. The Gardens and Art Gallery

of Shandy Hall, Coxwold

Shandy Hall is a writer's house museum in the former home of the Rev. Laurence Sterne in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. Laurence Sterne lived there from 1760 to 1768 as perpetual curate of Coxwold. He is remembered for his novels The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. The architecture of Shandy Hall ranges from a medieval long hall built for the local priest around 1430 and extended in the 17th century but significantly altered by Sterne with the income from his novels. Shandy Hall is a Grade I listed building and extended and altered internally for Sterne and subject to a major restoration in 1960. Shandy Hall is administered by the Laurence Sterne Trust, a registered charity and is open to the public.

The 'wild' area! In an old quarry there is an acre of trees, shrubs, bulbs, climbers and wild flowers and abundant wildlife.

The end wall of Shandy Hall. There are two walled gardens and an acre of unusual perennials, tulips, old roses.

Some of the wildlife wood engravings by the engraver artist Colin See-Paynton, who is considered one of the leading exponents of wood engraving in the country. His work is some of the most beautiful artwork you could ever wish to see!
