The Dales Countryside Museum, Station Yard, Hawes Coming painting EXHIBITIONS - See at bottom of page Peter Hicks is exhibiting in the gallery of the Dales Countryside Museum Station Yard, Hawes, North Yorkshire, England From Saturday 23rd September (preview) to Saturday December 23rd 2023 Reflections and Connections – Artistic Responses to Landscape A beautiful exhibition of work by Peter and Beverley Hicks (Father and Daughter) exploring their ideas and deeply felt concerns in relation to the landscape of North Yorkshire. As has been the case for many artists, writers and musicians in the past, landscape is the vehicle for their creativity and each artist allows their paintings to reflect on a place without being beholden to its familiarities. The Cafe and the Dales Countryside Museum partly use the old Hawes station buildings.
By the museum is a reminder of the days when steam trains passed through Hawes station. The locomotive is an ex industrial locomotive, but the number 67345 is 'false' because it was never a British Railways locomotive.

This interesting museum is
managed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, and tells the
story of the people and landscape of the Yorkshire Dales past and
present. The many displays interpret the development of the Dales from
prehistoric times to the present day. Themes and artefacts that
illustrate life in the Dales include: school days, home life, leisure
time, religion, transport, communication and tourism, farming, local
crafts and industries.
The Museum itself is housed in the converted Hawes railway station in Wensleydale in the north of the Park. The museum is designed to be fully accessible for wheelchair users and a wheelchair can be borrowed on site. The Museum has many interactive and hands-on exhibits and object handling sessions can be arranged for pre-booked groups. The Hawes National Park Centre, a networked tourist information centre can also be found in the same building as the Museum. There is a shop and Research Area in the centre. The Museum is free for children and also offers a range of educational activities and a selection of events, workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions also run throughout the year.

The Rope works - The Ropemakers in Hawes, which just across the yard from the Dales Countryside Museum. You can watch these famous ropes being made for a multitude of uses.
The River Ure rises in the hills above Hawes in Wensleydale and flows for 45 miles to join the equally lovely the River Swale at Boroughbridge. The River Ure is unique among the main Yorkshire Dales rivers because it does not share its name with the dale through which it flows. The houses in Hawes are mainly 'solid' grey stone but not unattractive. The streets of Hawes are very busy in the summer with many tourists stopping for the tourist attractions are passing through deeper into the Yorkshire Dales national Park.

St Margaret's Parish Church in Hawes is quite an imposing Victorian church built in the 1850s to a traditional English design to replace an old chapel of ease.
Looking east down the nave of St Margarets' into the chancel and altar area, above is an attractive stained glass east window.

Immortalised through Wallace and Gromit animation film, the Wensleydale Creamery is where the real cheese comes from. Cheese has been made in the dale since the 1150s when Cistercian monks started making it, before farmers took over after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.
You can tour the creamery and watch the cheese being made. There is sampling room, where, after tasting many varieties of Wensleydale cheese, you can purchase blocks of your favourites in the cheese shop. There is a gift shop, a good cafe and next to it is Calverts restaurant where you can feast on selected cheese dishes. * *
The drive to the village of Hawes is a most pleasant experience e.g. through Wensleydale, despite the bottlenecks of narrow street villages or towns like Hawes, but patience is rewarded by the ensuing surrounding grand scenery of the Yorkshire Dales.
