The tower seems lonely but remains surrounded by many deceased parishioners!

Marske-by-the-Sea is a small town situated on the North East Coast of England in the county of Cleveland. The town has a rich history dating back to the prehistoric times, but the town grew significantly in the 19th century when it became a popular tourist destination.

The name Marske comes from the Danish word “marsh” which means a boggy area. The area of Marske was likely to have been marshland until the first farmers drained the land in the 11th century. Marske became part of the estate of the Bishop of Durham and was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

In the 18th century, Marske was a small fishing village, but its growth began in the 19th century when the local landowner, the Duke of York, started to develop tourism. The town’s first hotel, The Ship Inn was built-in 1833, and the town’s popularity grew from there.

The opening of Marske Train Station in 1846, which was part of the Middlesbrough to Redcar railway line, made the town more accessible to tourists. The town became known for its sandy beaches and started to attract visitors from nearby towns and cities.

During the 20th century, Marske continued to grow as a residential town. It was heavily bombed during World War II because of it’s railway station but the town recovered quickly after the war.

Today, Marske is a modern town with a population of around 10,000 people. It still continues to attract visitors because of its sandy beaches, and there are many local shops, restaurants, and amenities for both visitors and residents to enjoy. The town is also home to a number of historic buildings including St Germain’s Church, which dates back to the 12th century.
