This is a really good museum experience which I've done my best to illustrate with a few photographs.

The welcome sign at the top of the road, down into Skinningrove and the museum (Land of Iron Exhibition).

Pebbles of ironstone found on Cleveland's beaches e.g. Staithes, that were collected, sold and sent to blast furnaces in Teesside or Durham for the production of iron. This practice ceased when the ironstone mines of east Cleveland opened up.

Some of the Loftus mine building structures are still visible and part of the Land of Iron Exhibition.

On the way into the Land of Iron Exhibition you see some of ways of shifting the mined ore.

The building on the left, with its large diameter cylinder shape, was part of the ventilation system of the mine.

The huge 'wheel' of the Sirocco Fan that operated as part of the ventilation system of the Loftus (Skinningrove) ironstone mine from 1911 to 1958

The dangers of mining

There is a photographic exhibition of the photographs Tom Leonard (1922 -1981) who recorded on film the lives of the mining communities in the Skinningrove valley and similarly 'Life in The Iron Valley' photography of Chris Killip and Graham Smith  (Land of Iron Exhibition).
