The inner part of the entrance to the National Trust's Beningbrough Hall contains the gift shop, which you pass through en-route to the 'tearoom'!

The wonderful teapot made of metal frame on which are suspended lots of ceramic tiles in the grounds of Beningbrough Hall.
The cafe-tearoom-restaurant by the walled garden where we had a lovely Christmas dinner lunch!
Above the entrance is a second hand bookshop and a display of photographs when Beningbrough Hall was used as an RAF base.

The south view of Beningbrough Hall. This is a grand red-brick mansion built in 1716 for John Bourchier, a York landowner.

The house was built some way above the banks of the River Ouse to avoid being flooded. Judging from the state of the grounds in early December 2009, a good move! Some 18th century items of dress?
Adam Walker and his family 1731-1821. Self-taught astronomer Adam Walker was an inventor, writer and travelling lecturer. He is shown with his family - wife, daughter, three sons, two of whom became astronomers. The painting is by George Romney (1734-1802) oil painting on canvas 1796-1801. The presence of a telescope in this domestic scene shows that by the 1790's astronomy was a popular domestic activity. As a long standing friend of the Walker's, Romney described this painting as 'his favourite picture of friendship'.
The National Trust, Beningbrough Hall, has an agreement with the National Portrait Gallery so that over 120 portrait paintings of important-famous 18th century figures are displayed in the rooms and galleries. Some examples are shown above and below.

In one room there are some sculptured heads. A River Ouse walk from York City Centre to Beningbrough You can return on foot or be picked up by a friend
From Lendal Bridge (in distance) you can get down to the east bank to start your walk to Beningbrough Hall.

Further north-west of York centre, some of the dykes for controlling flooding from the River Ouse and the footpath goes under the York A1237 outer ring road.
