44e. Berwick-upon-Tweed (5) The River Tweed Bridges

THE ROYAL BORDER BRIDGE

A few sections of the 13th-14th century medieval wall exist below the station by the Royal Border Bridge.

Some of the later fortifications in Berwick-upon-Tweed, huge development completed 1539-1542, later Elizabeth 1st ordered substantial improvements in 1558, added to and re-modelled from the 17th to the 18th century.

Built by Robert Stephenson between 1847 and 1850, opened by Queen Victoria herself - requested the name 'Royal Border Bridge'.  This was the last link to unite London and Edinburgh by railway. 28 arches, all being renovated from 1990s onwards.  In 1989 electrification gantries, specially designed to reduce the visual impact on the bridge and approved by the Royal Fine Art Commission, were installed on the bridge as part of the electrification of the line between London and Edinburgh.
