Corbridge Town & St Andrew's Church

The Roman Town of Corbridge

There is a really nice walk of about 4 miles (6 km) from Corbridge to Hexham, partly along the bank of the River Tyne.

You start by crossing the Tyne to the south bank by going over the fine multi-arched road bridge.

The road bridge at Corbridge, viewed from the start of the walk on the path on the south bank of the Tyne.

On the way you pass the last remnants of the ramp that led upto the Roman bridge across the Tyne to link up with the Roman town of Corbridge.

You can still see the marks of the Roman stone masons working the blocks into shape.

Near Dilston you cross over the Newcastle - Carlisle railway line.

There is a gentle waterfall at Dilston

The path takes you past Dilston Physic Garden, rich in medicinal plants - herbs for herbal health and healing.

From Dilston you pass open countryside of fields - looking north down across the grain fields in the valley of the Tyne

 

North in the distance is the prominent building of the 19th century Beaufront Castle

 

The last few km of the walk is through woodland e.g. Park Wood near Duke's House.

Eventually you emerge above southeast Hexham with a good view of Hexham Abbey.

 

Apart from the Abbey, you can also see the top parts of the 'Old Gaol' and the 'Moot Hall'.
