(i) The Bowness Ferry

Windermere is a long lake, so, if you want to explore landscape west of Windermere its best to take the Ferry from Bowness across Windermere to the 'Ferry House' on the west bank of Windermere.

	The Windermere Ferry, called MALLARD, is the only ferry in the Lake District that takes cars. It runs all year except for Christmas and Boxing day, and takes about 10 minutes to cross the centre of Windermere from Ferry Nab just south of Bowness to Ferry House at Far Sawrey. The service is run by the Highways Dept of Cumbria County Council.

 

(ii) Walking above and by Lake Windermere

Taking the path up towards Mitchell Knotts, you come across the ruins of 'Claife Station'  above Windermere in Scar Wood. Claife Station, being restored by the Natural Trust, was built in the 1790s, most popular in the 1830s for parties and dances and for appreciation of the landscape views.

After Mitchell Knotts we did a zig-zag we headed due north past a very small tarn, unnamed on the OS map.

Further down we turned right down to the Lakeshore.

When you reach the lakeshore there is a minor road that runs south all the way back to Ferry House.

At Bark Barn a new jetty project is being developed.

The small islands called the 'Lilies of the Valley' and the much larger 'Belle Isle' which is directly opposite Bowness.

(iii) A circular walk from Far Sawrey passing by Moss Eccles Tarn

The Cuckoo Brown Inn and Braithwaite Hall (limited parking spaces) in Far Sawrey.

We actually parked in a small lay-by on a bend just up from the Bowness Ferry (Ferry House) on the B5285 road to Hawkshead

 

You can start from Far Sawrey and head north to the east of Ivy Intakes and High Blind How

Heading northwest passed the little tarn at Three Dubs Crags.

West Een Tarn, another beautiful spot for a picnic.

 

	Moss Eccles Tarn was once owned by Beatrix Potter and now managed by the National Trust. Another beautiful spot to pause on this anti-clockwise scenic walk from Far Sawrey.

 

Heading south towards Far Sawrey

 

There is a great little cafe (easily missed down a side road) in Far Sawrey, its called the Hill Stop - we highly recommend it!

 

Some nice garden scenery in Far Sawrey by Spout House dated 1685.

 

	The Cuckoo Brown Inn is a fine old pub in the village of Far Sawrey

 

The B5285 road up out of Far Sawrey that then descends back down to the Bowness Ferry to Windermere.

Braithwaite village Hall in far Sawrey and the white house you go up by to return to the lay-by.

 

A pleasant walk southeast from Far Sawrey back to the lay-by overlooking Lake Windermere.
