Overview

Knockroe Passage Tomb is a Neolithic passage tomb on a slate ridgeline in the townland of Knockroe, County Kilkenny, Ireland, commonly called “The Caiseal.” It is a state-owned National Monument managed by the Office of Public Works and dates to the fourth millennium–early third millennium BC, placing it within the same broad tradition as the Boyne Valley cairns (Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth) though on a smaller and regionally distinct scale.

Location and landscape setting

The cairn occupies a south‑western facing slope above the Lingaun River (a Suir tributary) and is part of a local cluster of cairns that are intervisible and in some cases aligned with prominent landscape features such as the summit mound of Slievenamon in County Tipperary. Its position on a slate ridge overlooking the river bend gives it territorial and visual prominence in the local topography.

Date, cultural context, and probable function

Radiocarbon and typological comparisons place the monument in the Neolithic, roughly c. 3400–2900 BC (commonly cited around 3000 BC). Knockroe belongs to the Irish passage‑tomb tradition: communal burial and monumentality are core functions, but these cairns also had strong ritual, cosmological, and territorial roles. The western chamber at Knockroe is aligned so that sunset light at the winter solstice penetrates the passage, indicating deliberate astronomical/seasonal shaping of ritual experience.

Architecture, plan and megalithic art

Knockroe comprises a cairn that originally would have been an earthen mound bounded by large kerbstones and containing two stone‑lined passages and chambers — a larger western chamber and an eastern chamber — positioned in the south‑west and south‑east sectors of the mound respectively. Many of the orthostats and passage stones retain megalithic art: incised spirals, cup‑marks, zigzags and other abstract motifs carved into stones that remain in situ along the passages. These decorative programs closely mirror motifs found in the Boyne Valley, suggesting shared symbolic languages and craft traditions while also reflecting local expression in scale and arrangement.

Excavation history and finds

Modern archaeological attention to Knockroe began in the 1980s and a programme of excavations commenced in 1990. Excavations have focused on both chambers (with the eastern tomb reported in detail from the 1994 season); fieldwork revealed the mound’s construction sequence, the passage alignments, and in some contexts in situ decorated orthostats and structural deposits. Excavators compared architectural detail and art with larger Boyne Valley cairns, arguing that Knockroe, although smaller and peripheral in distribution, is closely comparable in ritual organisation and material culture to the major passage tomb complexes of Ireland.

Interpretation and significance

Knockroe is archaeologically significant for several reasons: it demonstrates the geographic spread and local expression of the Irish passage‑tomb tradition beyond the Boyne Valley; its preserved in‑situ megalithic art provides direct evidence for shared Neolithic symbolism; its winter‑solstice alignment highlights the role of seasonal astronomy in ritual practice; and the site’s relationship to landscape features such as river bends and Slievenamon underlines how monument placement negotiated territorial and social meanings in the Neolithic world.

General views of the Knockroe prehistoric archaeological site

Knockroe passage tomb is well worth visiting with its two passage tombs, megalithic art and solar alignments.

Knockroe dates from the 4th millennium BCE, contemporary with the much more famous Newgrange.

Many of the upright stones lining the passageways of the passage tombs of Knockroe are highly decorated with megalithic art e.g. spirals, hollowed ‘cup marks’, and zigzag patterns, but what were their meaning? just decorative art or something much deeper and symbolic to the neolithic people of the time 5000-6000 years ago!

Neolithic Knockroe passage tomb prehistoric site is known locally as 'Caiseal' meaning castle, for a great archaeology visit.

The Knockroe passage tomb site includes thirty stones with megalithic carvings on them.

The two passage tombs of Knockroe point towards the south-east and south-west.

In the landscape of prehistoric neolithic times, Knockroe would have appeared as a mound in the landscape, but all you see now is a raised earth platform ringed with stones, within which the two passage tombs have been constructed giving a dual winter solstice alignment.

Both Knockroe passage tombs are visible in this photo, nearest is the south-east alignment for the mid-winter solstice sunrise and beyond is the south-west pointing passage tomb to 'catch' the mid-winter solstice sunset.

The two passage graves are built on a 60 ft diameter raised be or cairn and a ring of kerb stones are clearly visible.

The south-east pointing passage tomb

The cairn facade by the south-east entrance the ground was found to be partly covered in white quartz like stones and some water-rolled stones (both like at Newgrange).

The main passage way leads to a double cruciform chamber and between them is a kerbstone with zig-zag markings.

The south-west pointing passage tomb

The passage grave facing south-west has a facade of stones at the entrance, note how narrow it is.

The south-west chamber is divided into three sections and points to the mid-winter sunset solstice.

Some grave goods, artefacts, such as a bead, pendant and a mushroom-headed pick were found.

At the back of the south-west chamber (left) is a slab of red sandstone which would be illuminate by the setting mid-winter sun shining through the entrance (right).

The floor slabs of the outer chambers were covered with a thick layer of cremated bone and some unburned bone of both human and cattle.

On the inside of the 'walls' the rock surface is elaborately decorated with spiral carvings and large concentric ring markings too.
