Near the town of Kilrush is a very impressive walled garden in the grounds of the old Vandeleur estate, though the original Kilrush House was gutted by fire in the late 19th century and finally demolished in the 1970s due to being a safety hazard.

From the main road entrance you follow a winding road up through a beautiful avenue of trees of Kilrush Wood arching over your head to the Vandeleur Walled Garden and Visitor Centre set in 170 hectares of native woodlands.

The Vandeleur Walled Garden is one of Co. Clare’s most beautiful botanical expressions of Ireland’s rich, natural history, in which you can enjoy walks in the woods, the plants of the walled garden, browse through the garden centre and enjoy lunch in the Brambles Woodland Café.

In the Visitor Centre learn when the Vandeleur Family lived in the very grand Kilrush House with stables and a walled garden to be envied and how they contributed to the development of Kilrush as it is today, and glimpses of the dark history of the area.

Plenty of space to play in the Vandeleur Walled Garden and admire the flowers too!

There are some lovely wooden sculptures in the Vandeleur Walled Garden of owl and hare.

The stable block visitor centre for information on the history of Kilrush and the influence of the Vandeleur family on the commercial development of Kilrush.
