 Clonakilty is a vibrant, friendly and colourful town a short distance
from several blue flag beautiful beaches. It has great cultural
tradition in rich food and music culture.
Take a wander through Clonakilty’s buzzing Friday market (illustrated
below), a good starting point to understand the town’s food culture
based on local organic farmers, cheesemakers, foragers, fishmongers,
bakers and coffee roasters jostle shoulder by shoulder with procurers of
exotic treats from Europe and the East. Clonakilty is a renowned music hub and hosts a great
line-up of festivals throughout the year including ock, pop, traditional
sessions in local pubs, Irish and international acts, and gigs at
world-famous DeBarras Folk Club.*

A wartime story from Clonakilty.

In the centre of Astna Square is a fine limestone
statue designed by J. F. Davis, erected to commemorate the centenary of
the 1798 Rebellion and specifically the men who died at the Battle of
the Big Cross, near Clonakilty. The statue is a reminder of the events
of the 1798 Rebellion in the context of the national consciousness of
the late nineteenth century and makes a fine historic contribution to
the small square which was named in honour of the leader of the
insurgents, Tadhg O’Donovan Astna.
The memorial monument statue to Michael Collins (1890-1922),
Clonakilty
was his home town.
It isn't just a monument to Michael Collins, but to all of those who
contributed to struggle for Irish national self-determination during the
Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War from 1916 to
1923.
