A brief history and description of what to see on
Garinish Island
The walled garden and other features where designed by
Harold Peto, (1854–1933), for the owner of Garinish Island, John Annan
Bryce, (1841–1923)
He was a native of Belfast, who purchased the island
from the War Office in 1910.
Bryce's son Roland bequeathed the island to the Irish
nation in 1953 and is now maintained by the Office of Public Works.
Garinish Island is renowned for its gardens and
architecture and has played host to writers including George Bernard
Shaw and George William Russell.
There is a restored Martello tower on the island dating
from the time of the Napoleonic Wars.
Garinish island covers15 hectares (37 acres) and is renowned for its
gardens which flourish beautifully in the mild humid micro-climate of
Glengarriff harbour helped by a mainly pine shelter belt.
Architectural features include a clock tower, a Grecian
temple, a Martello Tower, and an Italian casita.
There is a frequent ferry services from the village of
Glengarriff and they include a tour of the nearby seal colony and maybe
a view of a sea eagle which nest in Glengarriff Bay - Bantry Bay.
