Early Life (1850–1869)

• Birth: Born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn on 27 June 1850 on the Greek island of Lefkada to a Greek mother, Rosa Cassimati, and an Irish father, Charles Bush Hearn, a British Army surgeon.

• Move to Ireland: At age two, he was taken to Dublin, where his parents’ marriage collapsed. His mother returned to Greece, and his father left for military service, leaving Hearn in the care of his great‑aunt, Sarah Brenane.

• Education: Fragmented schooling in England and France; he suffered a severe eye injury that left him nearly blind in one eye.

• Emigration: At 19, he emigrated alone to the United States, arriving with almost no money.

  American Years (1869–1890)

  Cincinnati (1869–1877)

  • Began as a journalist for the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati Commercial.

  • Developed a reputation for vivid, sometimes sensational reporting.

  First Marriage (U.S.)

  • In 1874, Hearn married Alethea (“Mattie”) Foley, a formerly enslaved African‑American woman.

  • The marriage was scandalous for the era and contributed to his dismissal from the newspaper.

  • They divorced in 1877 and had no children.

  New Orleans (1877–1887)

  • Flourished as a writer and translator.

  • Published early works such as Stray Leaves from Strange Literature (1884) and Some Chinese Ghosts (1887).

  • His New Orleans journalism remains an important record of the city’s Creole culture.

  West Indies (1887–1890)

  • Sent to Martinique for Harper’s Magazine.

  • Wrote Two Years in the French West Indies (1890) and the novel Youma (1890).

Japan: The Defining Chapter (1890–1904)

Hearn arrived in Japan in 1890, intending only a short stay—but he never left. Japan transformed him, and he became one of its most influential cultural interpreters.

Life in Japan

• Initially worked as a schoolteacher in Matsue, then Kumamoto, and later Kobe.

• Fell deeply in love with Japanese culture, folklore, and everyday life.

• His writings introduced Western audiences to Japanese spirituality, aesthetics, and ghost stories.

Second Marriage (Japan)

• In 1891, he married Koizumi Setsu, daughter of a samurai family.

• Through this marriage he was adopted into the Koizumi family and took the name Koizumi Yakumo.

• They had four children. 

Academic Achievements

Teaching Career

• In 1896, Hearn became a Japanese citizen—one of the first Westerners to do so.

• Appointed Professor of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University, the most prestigious academic institution in Japan.

• Later taught at Waseda University.

• His lectures helped shape early Japanese understanding of Western literature.

Literary Legacy

Hearn published 13 major books on Japan, including:

• Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan (1894)

• Kokoro (1896)

• Gleanings in Buddha Fields (1897)

• Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904) — his most famous work, later adapted into the classic 1964 Japanese film Kwaidan.

His essays captured Japanese life during the Meiji era with unmatched sensitivity, preserving folklore that might otherwise have been lost.

Final Years and Death

• Hearn died of heart failure on 26 September 1904 in Tokyo at age 54.

• He is buried at Zōshigaya Cemetery in Tokyo.

No. 1 Victorian Garden

This opening garden reflects Hearn's Irish childhood in Tramore, staying in Tramore House with his guardian Sarah Brenane, with colourful Victorian-era planting and a small walled layout.

The Victorian garden evokes the period when he spent his happiest early summers in Ireland.

Fujidana (Wisteria Walk) is  a traditional Japanese wisteria trellis marking the transition from Western to Eastern influences in Hearn’s life. Visitors pass beneath it as they enter the Japanese-themed areas.

No. 2 The Transition Garden

The life changes from the age of 13 to 17, when Patrick was sent to Boarding School in Ushaw, Co. Durham, England

No. 3 The American Garden

A prairie-style garden representing the two decades Hearn spent in the United States, where he began his writing career. Planting includes sweeping grasses such as Miscanthus ‘Ferner Osten’.  This period includes work as a journalist and a 3 year marriage to an enslaved young woman Althea Foley.

No.4 The Greek Garden

A symbolic tribute to Hearn’s Greek mother, Rosa, often featuring an amphitheatre-like space and Mediterranean planting, including an ancient olive tree and herbs of Mediterranean origin.

No. 5 The arrival in Japan Garden

His idea was to write about the 'mysterious' country of Japan fro an American audience.

He decided to stay in Japan as an English teacher and married a Japanese woman Setsu Koizumi, a daughter of a Samurai family.

They has three sons and a daughter.

No. 6 The Tea House and Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden was constructed by a master gardener from Kyoto, this area includes the Ceremonial Tea House (Ochaya) and a projected tea ceremony experience.

The tea garden reflects Hearn’s deep immersion in Japanese culture including Buddhism and the Tea Ceremony.

No. 7 The Stream Gardens (pond gardens)

Fed by a natural spring, this garden features an iris-lined stream, several bridges, and flowing water that leads toward ponds and a waterfall.

The stream garden (pond gardens) mirrors the fluidity of Hearn’s travels.

A series of three small ponds connected by the stream. Water, rocks, and reflective surfaces follow the principles of a Japanese Strolling Garden, symbolizing contemplation and transition.

No. 8 The Woodlands - Woodland Garden

The Woodland & Fairy Trail is a magical woodland filled with ghost and fairy stories from Hearn’s writings, including tales like The Cave of the Children’s Ghosts and Urashima Taro. Designed especially for children.

Many of the trees where in the original garden to which have been added Japanese species e.g. Japanese Cherry and Japanese Maple trees.

Folklore & Story Garden in the final area ties together Irish and Japanese folklore, using storyboards, sculptures, and plantings to illustrate the myths Hearn translated and preserved. It completes the narrative arc of his life.

No. 9 The Gardens of Peace and Harmony

This area includes the largest of the ponds enclosed by various species of trees.

This gardens reflects Lafcadio Hearn's idea of peace and harmony through family life.

No. 10 The Azumaya - Summer Pavilion

A very traditional Japanese building and a rectangular pond.

No. 11 Journey's End - the story of a living God and shrine

The Zen Garden is a minimalist raked-gravel space representing Japanese Zen philosophy and Hearn’s later life as a teacher and thinker in Japan.

On going from 2026 is a new development which will include an interpretive centre with viewing decks, an extended indoor/outdoor cafe and a 100 seat event and lecture hall.
