Walk 22 "COVERDALE" From Paul Hannon's Wensleydale walks

From Nathwaite Bridge you head NEE to Lane Head with a deviation into the village of West Scrafton.

The beck that runs down through the Caygill Ravine,

The village centre of West Scrafton with its red post box and red telephone box.

You carry on NE Lane House and East Scrafton,

The big house and fake 'druids circle' at East Scrafton.

At East Scrafton you turn left off the minor road to descend through the fields to the River Cover again and passing an old limekiln.

On the banks of the River Cover are the scant ruins of St Simon and St Jude Chapel, first mentioned in 1328.

Originally a chapel of ease, became a ruin by 1542, but rebuilt as an ale house in 1586

Again crossing the River Cover to head north-west to Middlefields.

You then pass through Melmerby and follow the road south-west back to Carlton-in-Coverdale
