2. What is
'food security'?
To minimise the effects of lack of food, everyone should have access
to safe nutritious food - sufficient as well as providing a balanced
diet - this concept is known as 'food security'.
Food security can be simply defined as ...
"The
state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of
safe, affordable and nutritious food".
World Food Summit definitions
for:
(i)
Food security exists when all people, at
all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient,
safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food
preferences for an active and healthy life. Household food security
is the application of this concept to the family level, with
individuals within households as the focus of concern.
(ii)
Food insecurity
exists when people do not have adequate physical,
social or economic access to food as defined above.
The UN
definition of food security
A person is considered “food secure” when they
have the physical, social and economic access to sufficient,
safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food
preferences for an active and healthy life (as defined by the
United Nations Committee on World Food Security).
