The Hatton Gallery was expanded in 1965-1967 using concrete!

The Merz Barn Wall by Kurt Schwitters, a work of international importance.

Schwitters use of 'found materials' in the early 1930s in Nazi Germany found his work classified as 'degenerate'.

The Merz Barn Wall was originally built in a slate-walled building - a storage shed! Schwitters collected items to be embedded in the relief e.g. ceramic egg, mirror frames, pieces of metal or stone and held in place by plaster, that was itself worked to suitable smooth surface. The whole work was illuminated with a small skylight.

Fred Uhlman's African collections - much of the art is carved wooden figures of people and animals, many from West Africa.

All three were commissioned by One North East, the Regional Development Agency as part of their commitment to art and culture in the North East, and, subsequently purchased by Newcastle University.
