Lancaster Castle is situated high above the River Lune.
Originally a Norman Castle has been extensively remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle was built half inside and half outside the Roman fort (castrum). The mighty and imposing gatehouse dates from ~1400.
In the late 11th century and early 13th century the first motte and bailey were constructed including the mighty keep shown above. Lancaster Castle has been used as a prison, well built for the job! Lancaster Station
