Cobb Hall, Lincoln Castle

Cobb Hall was the site of many executions by hanging - the crowds gathered below the castle walls to view the spectacle!

The Westgate Water Tower, part of the water supply system built from 1909-1911, it looks like a Norman Castle Keep - which doesn't exist in the current buildings of Lincoln Castle. In the distance is a 18th century Ellis Mill - a classic windmill of the period.

Looking east along the castle walls towards Lucy Tower, the stone building that replaced the wooden structure built on the first of two Mottes the Normans built. Beyond is the Observatory Tower and the Cathedral

Inside Lucy Tower, the graves of prisoners who died of natural causes, illness or execution!

The tall extra bit of the Observatory Tower was added in the 19th century to the Norman-medieval buildings built on the 2nd Motte of Lincoln Castle.

Lincoln Castle was a classic Norman motte and bailey castle.

Some traces of Norman architecture (round window arches) can still be seen with some later medieval windows and doorways.

The walls of Lincoln Castle offer outstanding views of Lincoln Cathedral - pity about the scaffolding in 2019 !!!
