the City of Ely in Cambridgeshire and 'Isle of Ely' and the River Great Ouse Ely is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England and built on a 23-square-mile Kimmeridge Clay 'island' which, at 85 feet is the highest land in the fens. Major rivers including the Great Ouse, which flows through Ely, feed into the fens. Until draining began in the 17th century, Ely is virtually an island surrounded by freshwater marshes and meres. The economy of the Ely region is mainly agricultural. Before the fens were drained, the harvesting of osier (willow) and sedge (rush) and the extraction of peat were important activities, as were eel fishing—from which the settlement's name may have been derived—and wild fowling. The city had been the centre of local pottery production for more than 700 years, including pottery known as Babylon ware. A Roman road, Akeman Street, passes through the city. Ely railway station, built in 1845, is on the Fen Line and a railway hub, with lines north to King's Lynn, northwest to Peterborough, east to Norwich, southeast to Ipswich and south to Cambridge and London. The King's School, Ely, is a coeducational boarding school which was granted a royal charter in 1541 by Henry VIII, and the uses quite a few of the old monastic medieval buildings. In AD 673 King Egbert of the Kentish people died and St Etheldreda began the Minster at Ely. This minster was sacked by the Danes in 870, but reconsecrated in 970 by Ethelwold, Bishop on Winchester. After the Norman Conquest Abbot Simeon began the rebuilding of Ely Cathedral, as it would become, in 1083, but he died in 1093. Through the successive 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, Ely Cathedral grew into most the building you see today. This architectural development includes Alan of Walsingham's octagon, built over Ely's nave crossing between 1322 and 1328, and the "greatest individual achievement of architectural genius at Ely Cathedral", according to the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner (whose books adorn my shelves!). Building did continue until the dissolution of the abbey in 1539 during the Reformation. The cathedral was sympathetically restored between 1845 and 1870 by the architect George Gilbert Scott. The great arches at the west end of the nave supporting the main West Tower of Ely Cathedral. They are effectively a second crossing since there is a south west transept and a small north west transept, the original north west transept of Ely Cathedral collapsed in medieval times.

A general view looking east down the nave of Ely Cathedral, began around 1110. The ceiling of Ely Cathedral's nave was painted in Victorian times by two artists, Henry le Strange and Thomas Gambier Parry, they show all of history, starting with Adam, points to and is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

The Choir of Ely Cathedral was rebuilt in the 14th century, the elaborately carved choir stalls and misericords date from the 14th and 19th centuries.
The High Altar in the Presbytery of Ely Cathedral, such beautiful architecture from the 13th century and built to house the shrine of St Etheldreda who founded the original monastery in AD 673. The shrine attracted many pilgrims who came to offer gifts and seek help or guidance, sadly the shrine was destroyed in the reformation.
Ely Cathedral (7) The Lady Chapel
A general view of the interior of Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel. Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel is the largest of its kind in England and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. The Lady Chapel was completed in 1349 and once richly decorated with statues of saints, brightly coloured paintwork and stained glass windows. All of this was destroyed as Ely Cathedral suffered under the dissolution of the monastery in 1541.

The canopies above the seats in the Lady Chapel are highly decorated showing off the great skills of the medieval stone masons. However note the headless figures in the alcoves from the 'smashing' effects of the reformation!

Views of the Octagon Tower from the West Tower of Ely Cathedral. The Octagon is considered the glory of Ely Cathedral. In 1322 the Norman central tower collapsed. This was replaced by the Octagon Tower and Alan de Walsingham, Sacrist of the monastery, was responsible for creating this major engineering feat between 1322 and 1342.

The Octagon of Ely Cathedral is a huge structure of timber, glass and lead that stands on eight massive supporting stone pillars forming four giant pointed arches. Lower down you see some of the eight sides of the stone octagon tower, on which is built the wooden Octagon lantern tower.

The Sacrist's Gate at Ely, built in 1325 by the Sacrist Alan de Walsingham as an entrance to the Mason's Yard and buildings of the Sacristy.

The cannon on the green outside Ely Cathedral was captured from the Russians in Sebastopol and given to Ely City by Queen Victoria in 1860 after the Crimean War. Her gift was in recognition of the successful formation of the Ely Rifle Volunteers.
