11. Burghley House, near Stamford, on the border of Lincolnshire & Cambridgeshire Pictures and Notes on Eastern England and East Anglia Burghley House is a magnificent 16th-century country house near Stamford in Lincolnshire, England. Burghley House is set in a lovely park laid out by Capability Brown. Burghley House was built for Sir William Cecil, later becoming the 1st Baron Burghley, who was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1558 and 1587. Burghley House was modelled on the privy lodgings of Richmond Palace and became the residence of his descendants, the earls and, since 1801, the Marquesses of Exeter. However, since 1961 Burghley House has been owned by a charitable trust established by the Cecil family.
