62. A circular walk from Stainforth via Smearsett Scar, Elaine's cafe Feizor, Giggleswick Scar, Stack House, Stackhouse Weir, River Ribble, Stainforth Force and Stainforth Packhorse Bridge

There is adequate parking just off the main road (B6479) passing through Stainforth.

You initially head a short distance north and then turn left into a minor road that crosses over the Carlisle-Settle railway line.

You head down the lane from Stainforth Village to cross the River Ribble via the old Stainforth packhorse bridge at Little Stainforth.

You head almost due east through Little Stainforth up the hill, signposted to Feizor along the Dales High Way.

Looking north up the upper River Ribble valley towards Pen-y-ghent, heading up following the signpost to Feizor.

First view of Smearsett Scar which you can go over as part of the route.

Smearsett Scar is a fine looking limestone ridge.

However, we decided to take the easier route straight down the valley to Feizor.

It was a beautiful day and an equally beautiful walk.

Everyone is looking forward to the picnic!

Only a few people passed us on this walk.

 Elaine's Cafe, Feizor, is an excellent place to seek refreshment, the food is good and the cakes are very yummy!

Didn't immediately head for Stack House (Stackhouse), but took right fork south to Giggleswick Scar.

First view of Giggleswick Scar along which the path runs SEE in the direction of Settle.

Giggleswick Scar, above the busy B6480 road which runs onto the even busier A65 road.

An amazing limestone drystone wall built down onto the rock face!

There are several caves on Giggleswick Scar including the famous prehistoric Kinsey Cave.

Above/below: The cairn of Schoolboys Tower. Every new boy to Giggleswick School is supposed to add a stone to this very conspicuous cairn, which MAY have its origin from prehistoric times.

Just further along is a 2nd cairn - view from it looking down towards Settle

As you descend by quarry the, again, great views looking north up the Ribble Valley to Pen-y-ghent on the left

Final view of the gigantic Giggleswick Quarry, from which you head down to Stackhouse (Stack House) via short distance on the B6479?

The weir and salmon leap - just south-east of Stackhouse and north-west of Langcliffe at Holmehead (Holme Head).

You turn left at the weir, generally walking north on the west bank of the River Ribble, between the weir and Stainforth Bridge

On the banks of the River Ribble you pass through part of the excellent Stainforth Woods conservation project.

Great woodland views down to the River Ribble.

The impressive Stainforth Force.

Then back over the Stainforth Bridge ...

... and back up the lane, over the railway ..

... and back down the road to Stainforth.
